Fashion trends come and go, and they change so rapidly that it can sometimes be hard for stores to keep up. When it comes to clothing manufacturers like Down With Detroit, or those of us here at Detroit Life, understanding the latest trends and staying on top of them is important.

Not only do people not want to purchase “outdated” clothes, but they also want something that feels a little bit edgy and a little bit ahead of the game.

Detroit is unique in that it’s a city of resilience and toughness. The people here are strong and proud, and the clothing needs to reflect that. However, with trends changing all the time, that underlying “theme” has to change, as well.

So, what are some of the biggest trends we’ve seen in Detroit clothing stores this year?

Clothes With a Cause

Now more than ever, people want their voices heard.

There is so much going on in the world today, from pandemics to politics, that people want their clothing to reflect where they stand. Big, bold letters have become extremely popular to showcase any cause, whether you want to stand with your city, stand up against cancer, show support for a particular group, etc.

Clothes are a great way for people to express themselves, especially if they feel like there is nothing more they can do. Wearing a shirt with a particular theme or cause on it turns you into a walking billboard, spreading your message to everyone who sees you.

Caring About Comfort

Thanks to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are spending time at home. While things are slowly starting to return to normal (or a new normal), there are many people still working remotely, or teaching their children at home thanks to eLearning.

So, comfort has become imperative. Let’s face it, we all need a little more comfort this year with everything that has been happening.

Things like t-shirts, joggers, and sweatshirts have become popular to provide comfort at home, but they’ve also become more normal fare for going out. After all, who wants to get “dressed up” just to go to the grocery store or to run a few errands?

Today’s fashion is more about feeling good while looking good, and less about fussing over things. In these uncertain times, the last thing anyone needs is something extra to worry about – so, unless someone is on a Zoom call for work, comfort has become the King of the ‘stay at home’ life.

It’s no surprise that the most common trends in Detroit’s clothing stores are reflective of the times we’re living in. To say this year has been… different, would be an understatement. But, people want their voices heard, and they want to feel good if they’re ‘stuck’ at home. Those are two popular trends that don’t show any signs of slowing down this year, and possibly even into next year.
